Stillness

Pregnant pauses between two lovers
whose words bear weighted sounds
hold silence—
hanging slipping
as a glue of liquid pulls
and gives at its breaking point,
then surrenders
to the next moment—
words which hold capacity
to heal or shred.

Awakening to snow falling on snow
upon brittle yellowed stalks—
meadow grasses, upright
askew and tilted in harsh winds
every seed and bur rocked
dislodged into flight—silent flight
empty pockets of
seedless and burless grasses
poke through snow until tips
are but memories—silent memories.

Deeply housed in lofty snowy banks
where silence lives
in snow soft and deep
as New Mexico cumulus clouds
in the vastness, stilling all sound—
as above and below,
deep silence
then sunshine and that beauty
when snow wanes and grows into drips
lovers lie still bearing witness.
